Manufacturing exercise books/note books (khata & others), caters to the strong demand from schools, colleges, coaching centres, offices and institutions. The main raw materials include maplitho /writing paper of varying GSM for inner pages, Board paper for covers, along with stitching pins, tapes, shrink films for protecting them from dust and moisture during transport/storage and cartons used for outer packing, all of which are easily available from paper dealers and printing consumable suppliers in Kolkata and other towns. The process involves machines such as a paper cutting machine, folding machine, stitching machine, Dab press, Edge Squaring and trimmer machine. At first, large paper sheets are cut to size, then folded into sections and gathered. The sections are fitted with covers and stitched or pinned, pressed and finally, the notebooks are trimmed for neat edges, packed in bundles/cartons, and dispatched to the market. For a small unit, the cost of machineries varies from Rs. ₹5-20 lakhs depending on size, capacity, maker and automation features with output depends on page count and size. For such a small unit, around 500-1000 sq ft of built-up area is sufficient. The end products include School/college exercise books, office note pads, long books, practical record books, exam pads, spiral binding, customized and institutional notebooks. These can be sold through wholesale and retail stationery markets, directly to schools and colleges, via government and GeM, corporate branding orders, as well as online market places.
