A wire nail manufacturing unit requires an automatic wire nail making machine with a wire drawing machine, cutting and polishing drum. The wire drawing machine reduces steel wire rods to the required diameter, and the nail making machine cuts, points, and heads nails automatically. Semi-automatic machines cost around ₹2–5 lakh, while higher-speed fully automatic machines range from ₹6–10 lakh, depending on size, equal to roughly 8–20 kg of nails per hour. The manufacturing process involves drawing steel wire to the desired gauge, feeding it into the nail making machine, forming and cutting nails, and then polishing them in a drum with sawdust or leather scraps to remove burrs. The main raw materials are mild steel wire rods, polishing materials, and small amounts of lubrication oil. A small unit needs around 500–800 sq ft for production, storage, and packaging. Nails are used extensively in construction, carpentry, furniture making, fencing, and packaging. Sales channels include hardware wholesalers, construction suppliers, carpentry workshops, furniture makers and local markets.
