The Mechanised Processing of large Cardamom requires a modern unit for cleaning, drying, grading, and packaging cardamom to enhance quality, reduce post-harvest losses, and boost market value. The raw cardamom pods will be sourced from hill regions such as Darjeeling, Kalimpong, and surrounding areas, where cultivation is already practiced. Suitable locations for the unit include Kalimpong and Darjeeling with a space requirement of 800 to 2000 sq. ft. The machinery setup will include mechanised or hybrid solar dryers, cleaning and grading machines, de-stoners, moisture meters, and packaging equipment such as vacuum or heat sealers. A small-scale unit can process 100 to 300 kg per day, while medium units can handle up to 1,000 kg. The cost of machineries for a small scale unit will be around Rs. 8 lakh to 15 lakh. With strong market demand and from spice dealers, FMCG companies, and exporters, the processed large cardamom can be marketed through wholesale networks, online platforms, and direct trade. With the current rise in market prices, the venture offers enhanced profit margins.
