There’s a growing demand for tomato puree in West Bengal, driven by its use in various dishes and its convenience, further supporting the use of local tomatoes. Recognizing the increasing consumer demand for processed tomato products driven by better living standards and evolving dietary habits, the Sufal Bangla Project Management Unit launched a dedicated initiative for marketing tomato puree in the financial year 2023-24. The Feedback from consumers has been highly favourable, particularly in terms of quality, taste, and nutritional value.
The Tomato Purée Manufacturing Project aims to process fresh tomatoes with relatively low water content meet the inputs to produce high-quality purée. Ideal locations for setting up the unit include South-24 pargants, Murshidabad, Dk-Dinajpur, Hooghly, Nadia, and surrounding districts, where tomato cultivation is widespread. The unit will require 2000 to 5000 Sqf of land. A small-scale unit can process around 500–1,000 kg of purée per day, with the option to scale up based on seasonal availability. The estimated cost for machinery setup ranges from ₹10 to ₹20 lakhs. Only a few brands supply tomato purée online, and their inconsistent presence highlights a significant gap in meeting consumer demand.
